Liège–Bastogne–Liège 2026 — The Detour Betting Preview

The oldest Monument doesn’t do surprises — it just exposes who’s actually world‑class. No cobbles, no gimmicks, no hiding. Just six hours of truth serum.

THE FAVOURITE WHO BREAKS THE MARKET

Tadej Pogačar — 1.37

The bookies have essentially shrugged and said fine, take your money. Pogačar at 1.37 is the cycling equivalent of a spoiler alert: we all know how this movie ends. He’s won here twice, he’s in volcanic form again, and the Ardennes climbs are basically his personal LinkedIn endorsements.

If you’re backing him, you’re not gambling, you’re investing in a blue‑chip stock.

THE ONLY MAN WHO CAN CHANGE THE SCRIPT

Paul Seixas — 3.70

The kid is no longer a rumour. He’s a structural threat. Seixas has turned every climb this spring into a character‑defining moment, and 3.70 is the market admitting he’s the only rider who can match Pog on raw violence.

If he wins, it won’t be an upset — it’ll be a generational baton pass.

THE GHOST OF LA REDOUTE

Remco Evenepoel — 7.00

Two‑time winner. Two‑time demolition job. But this isn’t the same Remco who used to treat Liège like a solo‑break playground. His spring has been more tactical, more human, more… mortal.

Still: 7.00 for a rider who has twice turned this race into a one‑man parade is absurd value. If he lights the fuse, the rest of the race becomes background noise.

THE OUTSIDERS WHO COULD BREAK YOUR HEART (OR MAKE YOUR WEEKEND)

Mattias Skjelmose — 26.00

Always there, always dangerous, always one climb short of greatness. If the favourites hesitate, he’s the first to punish them.

Giulio Ciccone — 31.00

If he’s healthy, he’s lethal. If he’s not, he’s invisible. Liège suits him, but he needs chaos.

Tom Pidcock — 51.00

The talent is undeniable. The consistency is theoretical. 51.00 is the price of believing today is the day he strings six hours together.

Axel Laurance / Ben Tulett / Kevin Vauquelin / Oscar Onley / Romain Grégoire — 71.00

The “future overlords” tier. All capable. All exciting. All still waiting for the one big adult win. If the race detonates early, one of them could be the last survivor.

Tobias H. Johannessen — 71.00

If he’s on a good day, he climbs like gravity is optional. If he’s not, he climbs like gravity is personal.

THE LONG‑SHOT WHO ISN’T ACTUALLY A LONG‑SHOT

Mauro Schmid — 126.00 (Place: $26)

This is the misprice of the race.

Schmid has been quietly, almost suspiciously, excellent all year. He’s climbing better, racing smarter, and turning into the kind of rider who doesn’t win often… but when he’s good, he’s monument‑good.

He won’t beat Pog or Remco in a straight watts‑to‑the‑moon duel. But that’s not the bet.

$26 the place is outrageous value for a rider who:

  • thrives in long, attritional races

  • reads finales like a chess player

  • is in the form of his life

  • and will absolutely be in the final selection if the favourites hesitate

This is the classic Detour each‑way play: He’s not winning Liège — but he’s podium‑good in multiple timelines.

THE 151–251 CHAOS ZONE

This is where imagination becomes currency.

Lenny Martinez — 151.00

Tiny climber, huge engine. If the favourites stare at each other for 12 seconds too long, he’s gone.

Santiago Buitrago — 151.00

Always climbs well, rarely wins. But Liège rewards diesel persistence.

Albert Philipsen — 176.00

The hype is real, but Liège is a PhD‑level exam. Still — 176.00 for a phenom is spicy.

Daniel Martínez / Pavel Sivakov / Pello Bilbao / Mohorič / Kwiatkowski — 251.00

The “I’ve seen stranger things happen” tier. All have the engine. All need the race to go sideways in a very specific way.

THE DETOUR VERDICT

Most Likely Winner:

Tadej Pogačar — 1.37   If he attacks on La Redoute, the race ends right there.

Best Value Bet:

Mauro Schmid — $26 the place   The form is real. The price is wrong. The podium is absolutely in play.

Second‑Best Value:

Remco Evenepoel — 7.00   A two‑time winner at outsider odds is daylight robbery.

Wildcard Throw:

Romain Grégoire — 71.00   He’s going to win a Monument sooner than people think.

Long‑Shot Fantasy:

Lenny Martinez — 151.00   If the favourites blink, he’s gone.
